As with any major surgical procedure, patients should expect a dedicated recovery period following tummy tuck surgery. Designed to recontour and tighten the midsection through the strategic reworking and redraping of skin and underlying muscle, this transformative option can deliver a significantly slimmer, firmer abdominal appearance when performed by a skilled plastic surgeon. To preserve your results and protect your health during the post-operative phase, it’s crucial to be well-prepared for the healing process.
Below are some of our plastic surgeon’s top recommendations for supporting a smooth and successful tummy tuck recovery:
1. Avoid Smoking or Nicotine Use
Refrain from smoking or using any tobacco/nicotine products both before and after surgery. Nicotine constricts blood vessels and reduces circulation, which can interfere with the healing of both internal tissue and surgical incisions. Patients who continue to smoke during recovery are more likely to experience delayed wound healing, increased scarring, and a higher risk of complications.
2. Set Up Your Recovery Space in Advance
Before your procedure, prepare a quiet, comfortable area in your home where you can rest and recover. Stock your recovery space with essentials like pillows, medications, snacks, water, and entertainment, so everything you need is within easy reach. A little planning now can help you focus fully on rest and healing after surgery.
3. Secure a Ride Home
Because tummy tuck surgery involves sedation and can leave you feeling groggy or disoriented, it’s important to have someone you trust drive you home safely. You won’t be able to operate a vehicle on your own, and you may need help getting settled into your recovery space.
4. Fill All Prescriptions Ahead of Time
To avoid last-minute trips to the pharmacy, make sure your prescriptions are filled before your surgery date. Review the instructions for each medication carefully so you know when and how to take them. Having everything ready to go can allow you to stay on top of pain management and reduce the risk of missing a dose.
5. Stay Nourished and Hydrated
Rest, sleep, hydration, and proper nutrition are some of your best tools for healing. Make sure you’re getting plenty of all four in the days and weeks after surgery. We also recommend limiting salt and avoiding alcohol to prevent post-operative complications.
6. Sleep Smart
When resting or sleeping, use a pillow under your knees and keep your upper body slightly elevated. This position can ease tension on the abdominal area and minimizes discomfort. A recliner or adjustable bed can also be helpful in the early days of recovery.
7. Take It Easy
Don’t push yourself too soon. Even if you’re feeling better, avoid lifting, bending, or engaging in strenuous activity until cleared by Dr. Houssock. Overexertion can increase swelling, prolong healing, and even compromise your results.
Depending on the nature of their job, most tummy tuck patients take one to two weeks off from work and routine activities. Meanwhile, heavy lifting and vigorous exercise are typically restricted for at least six weeks.
8. Start Walking When You’re Able
Light walking around the house is encouraged once you feel up to it. Gentle movement promotes circulation, reduces the risk of blood clots, and supports your overall recovery.
When walking, maintain a slight bend in the knees to minimize tension on the abdominal area and prevent unnecessary strain.
9. Use Your Compression Garments and Drains as Directed
Compression garments can minimize swelling, support your abdominal muscles, and improve the contour of your results. Dr. Houssock will provide specific guidance on how long to wear your garment based on your surgical plan.
If drains are placed, they generally remain in place for 7 to 14 days. Dr. Houssock will provide detailed instructions for how to care for them at home.
10. Keep in Mind That Complementary Procedures May Extend Recovery
If your tummy tuck is performed in combination with other procedures (such as liposuction, breast augmentation, or a customized mommy makeover), your recovery period may be slightly longer or involve more intensive aftercare. Dr. Houssock will walk you through all of this during your pre-operative consultation.
